There are plenty of tourist attractions in China- from the ancient cities to the sprawling vegetation to rice fields, temples, waterfalls and sacred mountains. Even after decades of economic growth, the vast country of China has withheld its fascination- a contrast between its withheld ancient customs and the modern state that develops our interest in its culture that dates back many centuries. As big as China is, it is obvious it offers countless attractions for visitors, but here are the top five must-see attractions to visit on your vacation in China –
·The Great Wall of China:
For most travellers you haven’t really been to China unless and until you have climbed the Great Wall. Famous for being one of the most iconic symbols of China- the Great Wall is the longest wall in the world with a spell-blinding feat of ancient defensive architecture. The winding path over the steep mountains captures the awe-inspiring scenery. Not only is it one everyone’s list of must-see attractions in the world, but it has a deserved place among the “New Seven Wonders of the World” and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in China. It is 5000 kms long and covers China’s western frontier to the east coast, but the most preserved parts are close to Beijing.
·The Terracotta Army in Xi'an:
The Terracotta Army has been in the underground for more than 2000 years. It was discovered when a group of farmers uncovered one of the greatest archaeological sites in the year 1974. In the year 1987, it became one of the World Cultural Heritage. It is significant because of the hundreds of life-size models that represent the army made of terracotta which as per many theories were specifically built to protect the emperor of China in the after-life.
·The Bund in Shanghai:
The Bund is one of the most recognized architectural wonders of China. Located in Shanghai, it displays the world with its colonial European buildings, skyscrapers and structures. It is another side of the Huangpu- which houses one of the leading business districts around the world.
The Bund was Shanghai’s most prominent areas in the late 19th century and the 20th century. ·The Forbidden City in Beijing:
It was once a ‘palace city’, a place where the commoners were forbidden to entry. It is an extravagant display of the ancient Chinese architecture and wealth with over 8000 rooms with golden roofs. It was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties for 560 years till the year 1911. A total of 24 emperors have called it home and now it’s a World Culture Heritage. Currently, it holds a number of Chinese ancient cultural and historical relics.
·Potala Palace:
Potala Palace is the winter palace of the Dalai Lama from the 7th century. It symbolizes Tibetan Buddhism and takes a key role in the traditional administration of Tibet. It has over a thousand rooms and has contained living quarters for all the Dalai Lamas during their life and their luxurious golden tombs. It has remained the residence of the Dalai Lamas until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India after Chinese Invasion in 1959.
