Americans travelling to Japan for the first or even twentieth time may still find some surprises when they reach the immigration office. Like in America, Japan requires all foreign visitors to stand for a photograph and scan their fingerprints. Even so, the necessities to access a Japanese tourist visa to see the attractions of Japan are affordable and reasonable. ETS San Diego Passport renewal and visa services show you what the Japan Visa Requirements are for US Citizens.
Do you need to apply for the Japanese in advance? The only time US citizens have to apply for a Japanese visa beforehand (i.e. before their visit) of their visit at an embassy or a consulate is if they want to work or do business in the country. The visa requirements vary depending on the type of work, however, applicants commonly send their licenses or certifications, university degree, resume, passport copies, photos and an application straight to their Japanese employer months beforehand, who will submit it locally to immigration and receive a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). This Certificate of Eligibility will be returned to you when you come back to the US, where you will submit it with your visa application, fee, photo and passport valid for at least six months to a Japanese consulate or an embassy. Express Travel Services, an expedited passport and visa agency can do this for you if you don’t live close or can’t visit during working hours. Plus, as many work visas in Japan are issued for only a year, it’s a good idea to renew your passport before applying for a Certificate of Eligibility and visa- a passport renewal at the US embassy or consulate is, of course, possible- but it will also need a second visit to the immigration office in order to transfer your old visa to the new passport. ETS expedite passport and visa service staff can discuss the best options with you to decide if you should renew your passport prior to leaving the US. Who is qualified for Japanese visa on arrival? Americans qualify for a tourist visa on arrival in Japan for up to 90 days. There is no fee. The only requirements are to provide a passport that is valid for at least the duration of your stay. You also need to provide the proof of your departure, but that is not always checked out. Presenting your US passport in Japan for identification While it may be surprising, but you may need to present your passport as identification at hotels or while you are using the Japan Rail Pass- there are some local laws that every visiting foreigner must be aware of. It not always enforced, but every non-Japanese national is required to have some form of identification on them at all times. This means a valid passport for the tourists and a “zairyu” card for the residents. Planning to stay in Japan for more than three months? Guessing you are doing so on a tourist visa, many visitors choose to make a visa run by spending some time in South Korea or China before returning to Japan. Both countries are accessible by sea or air travel and will allow US citizens to come to Japan on a “new” three-month visa. Planning a trip to Japan?
