Survey says 40% of US citizens have a valid passport – but what exactly are the others missing out on? As it turns out- there are several reasons for getting a passport that you might have not thought of. A recent survey done by the Hilton Project found out hidden benefits of having a passport. As per the survey, 16% of recent international travelers used a dating app while they travel overseas. 20% of interviewees said that they found a potential romantic connection in foreign lands. Looks like having a passport can possibly also improve one’s love life. Plus, it is also implied in the results of the survey that your passport status can also make you more ( or less) attractive to people. Like for example, 44% of travelers (international) answered that they would think twice before marrying (or for some even dating) someone who doesn’t have a passport. Meanwhile, 7% of respondents described passport holders as more appealing compared to the people without it. 34% of married of married travelers said that traveling together is what deepens their relationship.
The question “can getting a passport help you make friends?” may be a bit strange, but it turns out that the answer is actually ‘yes’. As per the Hilton study, 37% recent international travelers gained new global friends during their ventures overseas and 35% of international travelers responded that they gained a deeper relationship with their travel friend. On the other hand, 32% of respondents that were part of the study said that they were motivated to travel by the desire to spend time with friends and family. While 9% answered that were enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting new people. Moreover according to their research, international travel can also make other people see you as more interesting.
Getting a passport can also improve one’s career prospects. 66% of interviewees of the Hilton’s project said that they believed that travel experience can be just as valuable as a college degree. While 15% of the guests said that ‘career advancement’ actively motivated them to travel internationally. Does international travel, however, make you more appealing to the potential employers? There are studies showing that participants that studied abroad were hired at a higher rate compared to the students without any international experience.
In this age of social media, it is impossible to go on Instagram and Facebook without seeing drool-worthy pictures of people having fun on their vacations. This definitely makes one think if they are missing out on something. Well, this is very common- according to the survey- approx. 85% of people who don’t have a passport and do not travel internationally believe that they are missing out on some great opportunities.
