Famous for being home to one of the greatest football teams, the stunning Iguazu Falls and the Rio de Janeiro carnival- Brazil is on the list of most people’s top travel destinations. As South America’s largest country, Brazil covers a majority of the continent’s north-western region. Neighbouring Uruguay, Argentina, it actually shares a border with every South American country except Ecuador and Chile. From the Pantanal wetlands to the tropical beaches along the Atlantic, there are many places that are interesting to visit in Brazil.
Cristo Redentor, Rio de Janeiro Cristo Redentor, or otherwise known as Christ the Redeemer is the famous statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro. Completed in 1931, the statue was the work of Paul Landowski, the Polish-French sculptor and Heitor da Silva Costa, a Brazilian engineer. It is constructed of reinforced concrete and soapstone. Located at the peak of Corcovado mountain, it provides a sweeping panorama from the interior of the Guanabara Bay to the north to the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to the south. Christ the Redeemer is 39.6 meters (approx.130 ft) tall, counting its 9.5 meters (31 ft) pedestal. Since it has become an icon of Brazil as well as Rio. Cathedral of Brasília The Cathedral of Brasilia, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Aparecida was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and dedicated in 1970. The Roman Catholic cathedral works as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasilia. There are four 3-meter tall bronze sculptures in the square access to the cathedral representing the four Evangelists fashioned by the sculptor Dante Croce in 1968. Furthermore, there is a 20-meter-tall bell tower which houses four large bells that were donated by the Spanish residents of Brazil and cast in Miranda de Ebro which is outside the church. At the entry of the church is a pillar with passages from the life of Mother Mary painted by Athos. Visitors here can view many masterpieces including the painted ceramic tiles by Athos and stained glass by Marianne Peretti. Iguaçu Falls One of the supreme natural wonders of the world- Iguaçu Falls is located on the border in between Brazil and Argentina. The waterfall system includes a total of 275 falls along the Iguazu river. The most awe-inspiring of them all is definitely the Devil’s Throat- which is a U-shaped long and narrow chasm, where about half of the river's flow falls into. On the Brazilian side of the falls, there is a long walkway along the canyon with an extension to the lower base of the Devil’s throat. Rio Carnival There are carnival celebrations all over Brazil, with the best known ones taking place in Recife together with the neighbouring Salvador and Olinda. However, the biggest and the most famous of carnivals are unquestionably the ones hosted in Rio de Janeiro. The Rio de Janeiro carnival attracts on average approx. two million people per day on the streets and almost half a million foreigners during the 4-day celebration. Amazon River At approx. 4000 miles the Amazon river is the second the largest river in the world- just slightly shorter than the Nile river but largest in terms of volume. It houses over 3000 recognized species of fish and every year newer species are being discovered. Furthermore, the Amazon Basin is covered by half of the planets’ remaining rainforests. There are jungle tours that include boating upriver into the dense damp greenery.
